Power Strips vs. Computer Power Backups by Chuck Lunsford

This article is intended to help the PC owner understand the differences between power strips and power backups. Primarily there are to main differences involved - the cost difference and what each unit can do are the major differences.

Power strips are simple surge protectors with multiple outlets to accommodate all your electrical devices. Power strips protect from a surge (or a sudden high amount current) .This feature is very important to keep your PC free from surge damage. If a surge does occur and reaches your PC because you don't have protection it almost always will be a quick and total computer death.

Battery powered backups protect you from power surges as well as power brown outs (loss of power). Brown outs often go unnoticed and damage your PC's internal parts. This type of damage usually has a slow but infinite death. Power backups also have a feature that may condition the incoming power to your computer. In simple terms it cleans the power it feeds your computer. Other features that make battery backups desirable is that some of the more advanced models come with software that enables you to program the computer to turn itself off before the batteries in the backup run out.

The deciding factor between these two product lines is cost. Surge protectors are inexpensive and power backups can range from moderate to very expensive. You get what you pay for. Don't go cheap on power protection. If you are in the market I would recommend two great name brands either APC or Tripp Lite. Be smart, look over your PC requirement before buying. Every PC setup has different requirement. For example, the bigger the monitor the bigger the power backup is required.

Don't be caught unprepared. Replacing a surge protector or battery backup is far cheaper than having an entire computer system.
